The Truvada drug by pharmaceutical giant, Gilead Sciences has been one of the most trusted antiretroviral medications for years. This was until word spread about its side effects and Gilead Sciences’ decision to pick profit over people. The drug has been known to cause severe side effects such as kidney failure and osteoporosis. Although Gilead Sciences had access to an improvement (TAF) which eliminated these effects, it chose to hide it so it could continue making a profit off Truvada. Dalimonte Rueb, LLP is, therefore, accepting cases for a Los Angeles Truvada lawsuit to get you the justice you deserve.
What Is Truvada?
Truvada is a PrEP medication manufactured by Gilead Sciences. It is used to treat persons living with HIV and is made from a combination of Emtricitabine and Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF). Truvada is also used to prevent HIV infection in people who have been exposed to the virus.
Can Take Truvada Cause Kidney Problems?
The kidneys filter substances ingested by the body and serve to compartmentalize the different blends of antiretroviral medications many HIV patients depend on to stay healthy. While kidney problems are generally prevalent in people with HIV, Truvada has been discovered to worsen a patient’s risk for acute renal failure and chronic kidney disease more than other treatments.
A study conducted at the University of California – San Francisco in 2012 found that among 10,000 HIV positive patients, chronic kidney disease risk rose 33% each year from taking Truvada. In other words, a Truvada-induced kidney failure risked significant increment each year. Additionally, signs of the Truvada-induced kidney disease remained for at least a year following the conclusion of treatment.
Is There a Link Between Truvada and Bone Injuries?
Having dominated the HIV drug market for so long, Gilead Sciences is facing a steadily growing number of lawsuits filed by patients who developed TDF-related kidney and bone injuries when a more potent and harmless alternative could have been made available.
At Dalimonte Rueb, LLP, the attorneys provide client-centric and purposeful representation to those who experienced osteopenia, bone density loss, osteoporosis, and related injuries from ingesting Truvada and other TDF drugs produced by Gilead Sciences. Our endowed team of attorneys accepts TDF bone loss claims on a contingency fee basis. This means you won’t pay any fee unless we secure monetary damages on your behalf.
What are some of the Side Effects and Injuries Caused by Truvada?
Studies show that whileTruvada may not outrightly cause Kidney diseases in most people, it heightens the risk of kidney failure in some, especially people with other risk factors and people over 50. Truvada has been linked to decreased creatinine clearance and a decline in eGFR (the kidneys blood filtration function); these effects are caused by Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) – an active ingredient in Truvada. Tenofovir is known to build up and damage delicate kidney tubules leading to tubulopathy and eventual disruption of the body’s pH balance.
Studies have linked Truvada to a 40% increase in bone injuries risk. Truvada has been known to cause bone loss in some adults and decrease bone growth in some children. In research lasting about one year and a half, 13 percent of patients who used Truvada and related drugs experienced a 5% or higher bone mass reduction. In this same study, 1.7 percent of patients who used Truvada had a bone injury. Truvada has also been linked to loss of bone density, which affects the strength of the bone and bone mass, associated with an increased risk of fractures and exposure to osteoporosis and other bone injuries.
Truvada Kidney injuries associated with the drug include:
- Acute kidney injury
- Chronic kidney disease
- Kidney failure
- Declining kidney function
- Acute renal failure
- Fanconi syndrome
Truvada Bone Injuries associated with the medication include:
- Decreased bone mineral density
- Tooth loss
- Dental problems
- Bone fractures
- Tooth decay
Have Any Truvada Lawsuits Been Filed?
There have been plenty of lawsuits filed against Gilead due to recent reports that claim that in 2001 Gilead Sciences had a less harmful antiretroviral, tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), but stopped the manufacturing of this drug until 2010, so they could preserve their patent and make more money.
In April 2019, 41 people across 12 states filed a class action lawsuit against Gilead in California. At Dalimonte Rueb, LLP, we understand that the only effective way to get Gilead Sciences to compensate its victims is through a lawsuit, so we urge you to get in touch with us today.
TDF Lawsuit Insists Gilead Held Up Safer HIV Drugs
Gilead Sciences got sued by HIV-infected patients in May 2018. They accused the pharmaceutical giant of delaying the progress of developing a less-toxic version of TDF, all in a bid to maximize Truvada profits.
The claimants held the company responsible for failing to warn patients about Truvada’s potential side effects, even though Gilead Sciences discovered as early as 2001 that TDF was highly unsafe in the doses prescribed; one that risked permanent and possibly fatal damage to the bones and kidneys.

How Much Does It Cost To Hire a Los Angeles Truvada Lawsuit Attorney?
A Truvada lawsuit is a personal injury claim, and as is the standard practice, attorneys would take on the case on a contingency fee basis, i.e., the legal fees would be a percentage of the settlement sum. If you don’t get paid, your attorney doesn’t get paid either.
The contingency fee often depends on the expertise of the attorney and how much time and resources he put into the case as well as the status of the case. Therefore, the more time and money your attorney invests in the case, the higher the contingency fee.

The Truvada PrEP drug was created to save lives. Instead, it has led to the loss of lives and reduction in the quality of life for some.
